Al-Andalus [a] ( Arabic: الأَنْدَلُس) was the Muslim -ruled area of the Iberian Peninsula. The term is used by modern historians for the former Muslim states in modern Spain and Portugal. [1] . At its greatest geographical extent, it occupied most of the peninsula [2] [3] [4] and a part of present-day southern France, Septimania (8th century).
Al-Andalus is the geographic term used to denote those areas of modern Spain that came under Muslim control in the Middle Ages. Today, the term (Spanish, Andalucía) refers to a particular territory located in southern Spain.
