Now, with the predominance of Italian in schools and the media, Sicilian is no longer the first language of many Sicilians. In fact, in urban centers in particular, it's more common to hear standard Italian spoken rather than Sicilian, especially among the younger generations.
Luckily, most Sicilians can also speak Italian. While they may speak with a thick accent, through practice you can learn to communicate and get around Sicily using Italian. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you could always learn Sicilian instead!
