- KICK (1987) Almost every song on this album is iconic. It went 6x platinum in the U.S. and 7x platinum in Australia, and eight of its 12 tracks were technically singles -- and four of those were top 10 hits in the U.S. The video for "Need You Tonight/Mediate" won five awards at the 1988 MTV VMAs.
- Shabooh Shoobah (1982) Like KICK, Shabooh Shoobah is packed from top to bottom with songs that perfectly communicate the essence of this band: cheeky, sexy grooves with post-punk punch.
- Listen Like Thieves (1985) Listen Like Thieves came out in 1985, and it solidified the band's move from soft-edged post-punk to danceable pop-rock -- which they'd perfect on their next album, 1987's KICK.
- The Swing (1984) After breaking into the States with 1982's Shabooh Shoobah and touring with Adam Ant, INXS adjusted on The Swing in 1984. It opens with the single "Original Sin" -- which only reached #58 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 -- establishing that they were the same band but definitely had more money and the intention to make bigger hits.
- X [1990] Best single: By My Side. Best non-single track: Lately. X followed hot on the heels of Kick. So it was a tough act to follow, and in fact the band’s seventh studio album didn’t manage to replicate its predecessor’s success.
- Kick [1987] Best single: Mystify. Best non-single track: Guns In The Sky. Guns In The Sky opened INXS’s set list at Wembley in 1991, and what a way to start the biggest show of their career.
- The Swing [1984] Best single: Burn For You. Best non-single track: Johnson’s Aeroplane. I love The Swing. It’s so 80s and so new wave, for starters. Just look at the cover and check out those mullets!
- Welcome To Wherever You Are [1992] Best single: Beautiful Girl. Best non-single track: Communication. The follow-up to X marked a change in direction for INXS, to me.
