Feb 27, 2019 · In 2016, 94.3% of Black people lived in Canada’s census metropolitan areas (CMAs), compared with 71.2% of the country’s total population. Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa-Gatineau, Edmonton and Calgary were each home to at least 50,000 people who reported being Black in 2016.
According to the 2021 census by Statistics Canada, 1,547,870 Canadians identified as Black, constituting 4.3% of the entire Canadian population. [10] Of the black population, 10 per cent identified as mixed-race of "white and black". [11]

Aug 23, 2023 · Between 2001 and 2021, the racialized population in Canada increased from 3.85 million to 8.87 million people (Table 1, excluding non-permanent residents). This was a 130% increase, compared with a 1% increase for the White population. The growth rate ranged widely across subgroups of the racialized population.
According to Statistics Canada, 1.5 million people in Canada reported being Black in 2021, with 41% reporting they were born in Canada. 2 In 2016, Black immigrants hailed from over 170 different places of birth. The vast majority of the Black population – 94.3% – lives in Canadian urban centres.
Feb 12, 2024 · To begin with, the Black population in Canada is growing rapidly — from 573,000 in 1996 to 1.5 million in 2021. Around 60 per cent of Black people in Canada were born abroad. While earlier generations of Black immigrants were mostly from the Caribbean, more recent immigrants are coming from African countries, including Nigeria and Ethiopia.
