Jan 30, 2021 · Keijo was an actual sport! But it only became real after the Keijo anime finished broadcasting in Fall 2016. If the anime didn’t serve as an inspiration, this all-female sport wouldn’t even have existed in Portugal.
Going in I knew it was gonna be a silly ecchi show about a nonsensical sport. But what I did not know is just how damn competent it is on nearly all aspects. It is a legit good sports anime with some ecchi, not an ecchi show with sports.
One thing Keijo!!!!! did really well IMO was the fact that everyone in-world took it absolutely seriously. It is clearly a gag and partly comedy anime/manga, but the characters treat it as a real sport which gives the story at least some semblance of weight without taking away the comedy effect of it.

I think the big difference is that keijo is a made up sport purely for fanservice, while Free, which does have a ton of fanservice, is at least dealing with a real sport without anything beyond the normal bounds of reality.
