The Kvens are a national minority in Norway. They once spoke a Finnic language, nowadays officially called Kven, before language shift started around the beginning of the twentieth century in Troms, and later in the mid-twentieth century in Finnmark ( Aikio 1989; Eskeland et al. 2003; Lane 2010: 64 ).
In 1996, Kvens were granted minority status in Norway, and in 2005 the Kven language was recognized as a minority language in Norway. Name. The origin of the term Kven is disputed. There is no evidence that modern Kvens are descendants of the Kvens mentioned in a few ancient Norwegian and Icelandic sources.
The Kven language is still a contested language, even among the Kven minority itself (Sollid Reference Sollid, Andreassen and Olsen 2020:89–90). It is important to make a distinction between Kven and MWF because this highlights the status of Kven as an independent language.
