What is Mean Streets about?
I think Mean Streets is straight up one of the best movies ever made, it practically invented a whole new style of American cinema, and might be my favorite Scorsese overall. It's obviously not as polished as some of his later masterpieces like Raging Bull or Goodfellas but the roughness suits it anyway.

It's a raw movie, filmed on a low budget by a young and far more naïve Martin Scorsese. But all his typical elements are in place, to be expanded upon later in his career. Keitel and De Niro are superb, particularly De Niro who shows great range very early on in his career.
Likewise, director Kathryn Bigelow said that Mean Streets was one of her five favorite movies. In an interview with GQ, Spike Lee named Mean Streets as one of his influences, along with On The Waterfront. In 2011, Empire listed the film as #1 on its "50 Greatest American Independent Films" list.
