Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV; German: [ˌmeːklənbʊʁkˈfoːɐ̯pɔmɐn] or ⓘ; Low German: Mäkelborg-Vörpommern), also known by its anglicized name Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, is a state in the north-east of Germany.

Germanic tribes had settled in the region by the year 500, though these people were displaced by Slavs before Germans resettled the area as part of a more general movement of Germans toward the east.

Germany's most thinly populated state is located in the most northeastern part of the country, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of Germany's new Länder (states) after 1990. It borders the Baltic Sea (in German: Ostsee) to the north, Schleswig-Holstein to the west, Lower Saxony to the southwest, Brandenburg to the south, and Poland to the east.
The German part forms about one-third of the present-day north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the Polish part constitutes the westernmost border areas of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
