ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition is a great achievement for the band. They were able to take a Mussorgksy work and transform it into that distinctive ELP style. The effect is great. While the album may not be essential to own, your collection would indeed be made better if you were to own it.

It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way.

Jan 5, 2018 · Even though its an interpretative piece, Pictures at an Exhibition deserves acknowledgement and its release fits perfectly between Tarkus and Trilogy. But on the whole, I'm partial to Tarkus as a stand alone favorite.
