Just a nudge, and the movie would fall over into self-parody, and maybe work better. But I fear it is essentially serious, or as serious as such goofiness can be. It opens in prison, with cell mates Rudy (Ben Affleck) and Nick (James Frain).
Reindeer Games is actually quite an entertaining movie and more so than I was led to believe. The one thing that may go against the movie is the absurd plot and even more absurd ending, but I was able to stay with the ridiculous twists and turns and embrace them for what they are.

- Test screenings resulted in audience feedback that was “not bad, but not what the producers had expected,” and it led to immediate pressure on Frankenheimer to cut the film.
