The Garden Murder Case 1936 ★★★★. Watched Nov 21 , 2023. This Philo Vance murder mystery took me by surprise in just how much I enjoyed it! Perhaps the most colorful cast this series has had so far, with not one, but multiple murdered peppered throughout, and Edmund Lowe playing what is perhaps the most endearing Philo Vance to date.

The Garden Murder Case involves three separate victims, Douglas Walton, Gene Lockhart, and Frieda Inescourt. The sinister atmosphere around the perpetrator kind of gives it away, the mystery is really how all the killings are connected and how they are accomplished. I will say this though.
The Garden Murder Case is a moderately entertaining entry in the Philo Vance series. The plot is interesting because two of the three murders don’t appear to be homicides. Edwin L. Marin moves matters along breezily and stages the revelation of the killer in the final scene very well. Edmund Lowe is rather bland as Vance.

Thoughts: Barely engaging crime/drama mystery that is marred by the boring performance by Lowe as Philo Vance. Bruce is good. Ralph is good, as always, as the crotchety old lady. This is just your standard 1930s potboiler mystery movie.
