Ferber's 1902 interpretation of the 1901 Wright Glider was crude, but he did repeat one of their essential experiments -- he flew it as a kite to get some idea of the lift it would produce. In 1904, Ferber designed and flew a glider with an elevator in front and a fixed horizontal stabilizer in back.
1899; and the Wrights. Ferber’s most significant accomplishment was his successful motivation of a group of enthusiastic aviation pioneers in Paris. His contacts with the Wrights eventually led, indirectly, to the agreement the Wrights struck with a French syndicate to fly publicly first in France in 1908.
This machine weighed 66 lb (30 kg) and had a wing area of 161 sq.ft (14.96 sq.m). Taking off from some 17 ft (5 m) high scaffolding, Ferber stayed in the air for 24 seconds, and advanced 50 ft (15 m). This glide took place on December 7, 1901.
Ferber then built his fifth aircraft, based on photographs of the Wright's 1901 glider. This resembled the Wright glider in being a two-bay biplane with a forward elevator, but the resemblance ends there.
