Dec 25, 2023 · The Wainwright Building: A Landmark of Innovation . The Wainwright Building was commissioned by Ellis Wainwright, a prominent St. Louis brewer, and completed in 1891. It marked a significant departure from the prevailing architectural norms of the time, setting a new standard for skyscraper design.
After prodding by the National Trust and the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, the State of Missouri purchased it in 1974. Renovated and reopened as the Wainwright State Office Building in 1981, the landmark once again displays its stunning deep red Missouri granite base, brick and terra-cotta mid-section, and terra-cotta attic and cornice.

He died in 1924, the same year as Louis Sullivan. His misdeeds are now forgotten, but two great architectural monuments in St. Louis bear his name: the Wainwright Building and Wainwright's Tomb (also designed by Sullivan), where he and his wife lie buried.
