Serving as the first provincial capital of North Carolina, the city has remained an industrial hub. It’s also a fantastic example of colonial wealth in architecture.
Located in northeastern North Carolina, Edenton is a small unique town known for its authentic 18th-, 19th- and early 20th-century architecture and the stories about the people behind these public buildings and homes.

- Penelope Barker House Welcome Center. A great way to start exploring is with a stop at this historic waterfront site on the Edenton Bay harbor. Constructed in 1782, the three-story welcome center was originally home to Penelope Barker, who organized the famous Edenton “Tea Party” of 1774, along with 50 other local women, to petition against the purchase of taxable British goods in a rare female-led political protest that caused quite a stir.
- Edenton Trolley Tour. Just steps from the welcome center, board a trolley for a leisurely, 45-minute guided tour and narration about what Edenton was like during Colonial times and the important people who lived here, including signers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
- Roanoke River Lighthouse. Believed to be the last surviving example of a square-frame American lighthouse built for a screw-pile base, this captivating landmark served as a beacon for ships from 1887 to 1941.
- Chowan County Courthouse. One of only two sites where the N.C. Supreme Court is currently allowed to meet outside of Raleigh and the oldest public building in the state, the 1767 Georgian-style Chowan County Courthouse was used by prominent revolutionary judges who heard cases here.
North Carolina’s first Colonial capital was also home to the first political action by women in America’s history. Edenton was established in the late 17th century and incorporated in 1722. Once the second largest port in North Carolina, Edenton provided slaves with a means of escape via the Maritime Underground Railroad.
