     Forget about programming for now (I will come later)

     • Think about an animal, Let's say Tiger. It jumps, it runs, iteats, it sleeps...
     • consider another animal cat. it also jumps, eats, sleeps,....
     • they have some common things between them. these behaviors are commonfor animals. They are extending the common behavior from theirancestors.

     Now come to the Programming world

     Let's create those animals in Java. Every animals have some common things among them. right?

     class Tiger { float weight; float height; - public void jump() { System.out.println("hey, See the jump"); }- public void eat() { System.out.println("Tiger is eating, don't disturb"); }}-class Cat { float weight; float height; - public void jump() { System.out.println("hey, See the jump"); }- public void eat() { System.out.println("I can eat veg"); }}-

     but in programming world, We should not repeat. (Repeating a code is a not good practice). you can see jump has common code between cat and tiger. eating is differentiating.

     So we can tell put those common things inside a Super class Animal. and extending them to cat and tiger

     In above code, we reused jump method and changed eat method for cat and tiger.

     The process by which one class acquires the properties(data members) and functionalities(methods) of another class is called inheritance. The aim of inheritance is to provide the reusability of code so that a class has to write only the unique features and rest of the common properties and functionalities can be extended from the another class.

     Generally speaking, one can differentiate static vs dynamic programming languages by their type systems. in dynamic type system you can have the following

     var x = 2x = "c"-

     meaning, the type of a given variable may change during its life time. static type systems do not allow that. C# dynamic data type is an example of this feature.

     Be careful not to confuse dynamic with inferred or weak type systems. an inferred type system will not require formal declaration of the variable, but will infer the type from the assigned value. it will not allow the variable to be re-declared with different type.

     var x = 2 // the type of x is intx = "C" // compile error: incompatible types!-

     a weak type system is one that allows operations that are not compatible with the declared type of the variable. C allows pointers to be casted to any type:

     foo(void *ptr) { char *str; strcpy(str, (char *)ptr); int i = &(int *)ptr + 1;}

     all combinations of type systems exist, sometimes in the same programming langauge: static/dynamic, implicit(inferred)/explicit, weak/strong.

     Yes, or it will be eventually (there may still be some things they're working on replacing since they were used under licence). Sun committed to making it open source and you can download it from them. Check out OpenJDK.

     A programming language isn't in it self open source or not, but an implementation of it might be. Yes, there are open source implementations of Java. Sun's Java implementation (the most popular one), is one of them.

     The "official" SUN implementation of the language itself is not, but there is a community-driven process (not sure how well it works) for suggestions to improve the language - the Java Community Process. There are also open implementations of the Java development tools and runtime, such as OpenJDK.
