The St. Bernard or Saint Bernard (UK: / ˈ b ɜːr n ər d /, US: / b ər ˈ n ɑːr d /) is a breed of very large working dog from the Western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. They were originally bred for rescue work by the hospice of the Great St Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border .

A powerfully built, muscular dog with a massive head and drooping ears, the Saint Bernard stands 26 to 30 inches (66 to 76 cm) tall at the withers and weighs 120 to 180 pounds (54 to 82 kg). Its coat is red-brown and white or brindle and white and may be either short and dense or medium-long.
