  4. Incantation and Dance. The first published work of John Barnes Chance, this superb composition is widely recognized and acclaimed for its wealth of rhythmic and melodic inventiveness. It opens with a slow, intriguingly strange introduction which leads to a fast, exciting syncopated section which is a delight for the percussion section.

  5. Incantation • Short, mournful, mysterious melody led by flute often in low register (increases range as the melody continues) • Instruments slowly added throughout the section • Increases in texture & dynamic, rich timbres • End of Incantation/beginning of Dance signified by accented, repeated triplet patterns & exposed percussion Dance
