History of Cologne Early settlement and medieval growth. After Julius Caesar destroyed the Eburones in 53 bce, the Roman general Agrippa colonized the area with another tribe called the Ubii, who came from the right bank of the Rhine. A fortified settlement was established on the site about 38 bce.
Cologne was founded and established in Germanic Ubii territory in the 1st century CE as the Roman Colonia Agrippina, hence its name. [3] . Agrippina was later dropped (except in Latin), and Colonia became the name of the city in its own right, which developed into modern German as Köln.
