He is known principally for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to see and then reach the Pacific coastline of the New World.

A poor, illiterate hidalgo, he sailed for the New World in 1501 with the expedition of Rodrigo de Bastidas, exploring the northern coast of modern Colombia.
Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born at Xerxes, in Spain, ill 1475, and died in Panama about 1517. His first visit to America was made in 1500. Ten years later he went to Darien, where he became alcalde of a new sets tlement.
