Jul 7, 2017 · Afraid of further attacks, Edirne’s inhabitants moved away in droves and when the Russians once again occupied the city in 1877 during the Ottoman-Russian war, Edirne was greatly damaged. Even though the city was returned to the Ottomans under the Bucharest Treaty of 1913, it (and the empire) never again reached their former glory.
Adrianople was briefly occupied by imperial Russian troops in 1829 during the Greek War of Independence and in 1878 during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. The city suffered a fire in 1905.

Edirne’s former name is Adrianople (Hadrianoupolis), i.e. “City of Hadrianus”, named after the Roman emperor who founded the city on the site of Thracian village of Uskudama. In the 14th century, the Ottomans captured the city and made it their capital, this lasted until the Fall of Constantinople.
Dec 3, 2012 · The city of Edirne was the official Ottoman capital city for at least half a century after the defeat of Sultan Bayezid II by Timur and before the conquest of Constantinople (by his great grandson Mehmed II). Yet until quite recently, the city received very limited attention from historians.
Jun 2, 2021 · After the defeat suffered by the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Edirne was occupied by Greece in 1920. The city finally came under Turkish sovereignty in 1922 at the end of the Turkish War of Liberation.
