The House of the Post Office was built by French architect Jacques Marquet between 1766 and 1768. The building was the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior and State Security in Francoist Spain. It is currently the seat of the Presidency of the Madrid Community .

It is the oldest building in the Puerta del Sol today. The second oldest is the Casa Cordero, which throughout the history of the square has been changing its use. The Puerta del Sol has excited several writers since the beginning of its history, and many of them have included this space in their literary works.
Mar 8, 2023 · La Puerta del Sol, meaning “The Gate of the Sun” in Spanish, is a public square in Madrid, Spain. It got its name from a former main entry gate into the walled city of Madrid when it was first constructed in 1766.
The original, which dates back to the 17 th century and once adorned a fountain in this very spot, is now stored in Casa de la Villa. Puerta del Sol’s third and largest statue is found in the centre of the square’s fountain and depicts King Charles III of Spain on horseback.
