The history of Tétouan (or Tetouan) stretches over 2000 years to its origins as a Mauretanian Berber settlement named Tamuda, located at near present-day Tetouan by the south bank of the Martil Valley. The site later became a Phoenician trading post.

Al-Mandari had fled Granada during the Catholic Reconquista and, like many immigrants from Andalusia, settled in Tétouan.
