Based on Anne Holm's novel "North to Freedom," "I Am David" (2003) is an indie drama/adventure by Paul Feig (writer/director). The movie effectively reminds us that there was an Iron Curtain from 1945-1989 and that crimes against humanity were pretty much business-as-usual for Communistic governments in USSR and Eastern Bloc countries.
Adapted from Ann Holm's book, I AM DAVID follows the story of the titular David, who grows up in a Bulgarian labor camp in the 1950s. He doesn't know why he's there or what happened to his family, of whom he has only flashes of memory.

Jan 1, 2004 · It was made into a movie (I AM DAVID), which was good, but not as good as this wonderful book about a boy who escapes a prison camp and finds his way north to his mother in Denmark. There are several wonderful parts. When David wakes up the morning after his escape, he sees color all around him.

Sep 13, 2003 · I read the book before seeing the movie and was impressed with how similar they were. Ben tibber, who played David, was really a wonderful actor and communicated a wealth of depth even in the silent scenes. I was also very uplifted by the message of hope and the courage to press on.
It was made into a movie in 2003. The novel received several awards, including the Crystal Heart Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, the Best Scandinavian Children’s Book, the Boys Club of America Junior Book Award Gold Medal, and was an American Library Association Notable Book.
