Located in southern Bavaria 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of Munich, Lake Starnberg is a popular recreation area for the city and, since 1976, one of the wetlands of international importance protected by the Ramsar Convention. The small town of Berg is famous as the site where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was found dead in the lake in 1886.
How to get to Starnberger See from Munich. The quickest way to reach the lake is on the A95 road or S-Bahn train line 6 via Starnberg to Tutzing. Beaches on the lake are within easy reach of the train stations and car parks in Tutzing, Possenhofen and Feldafing.
Starnberg is a popular local resort on Lake Starnberg in Upper Bavaria. The town is 30 km (19 mi) southwest of Munich, at the north end of Lake Starnberg. It is in the heart of the "Five Lakes Country", and is the capital of the district of Starnberg. In 2018, it was home to 23,000 people.

At over 20 kilometers long Lake Starnberg is dotted with picturesque villages, and with its mountainous backdrop, the lake actually appears to disappear into the Bavarian Alps themselves.
starnberger see is biggest and beautiful lake in south of munich. apart from taking boats, one can trek/walk/bike around the lake and posh starnberg area. remember restaurants by side of the lake could be very expensive. but view of alps in the background is very refreshing
