Sep 15, 2023 · The Kentucky River is a 260-mile-long tributary of the Ohio River that drains much of the central region of Kentucky, passing through the coal-mining regions of the Cumberland Mountains in its upper course and the Bluegrass region in the north-central part of the state in its lower course.
The Bluegrass region is commonly divided into two regions, the Inner Bluegrass encircling 90 miles (140 km) around Lexington, and the Outer Bluegrass that contains most of the northern portion of the state, above the Knobs.
