Aug 1, 2022 · The scenes set in Fort Smith, Arkansas during the opening sequences of ‘True Grit’ were actually filmed in the small city of Granger, Texas. The location was chosen specifically because of the prevalence of plentiful empty lots between brick buildings and the rail terminus.
Nearby Bartlett is home to a bank that was transformed into an undertaker’s office for the film, while memorable courtroom scenes involving Rooster were shot in Blanco, some 50 miles to the west of Austin.

Filming. The film was made on location in Germany at the Bavaria Film Studio in the Munich suburb of Geiselgasteig in rural Bavaria, where sets for the barrack interiors and tunnels were constructed. The camp was built in a clearing of the Perlacher Forst (Perlacher Forest) near the studio.
