Throughout The Road, McCarthy crafts original and memorable characters. All of these are unnamed or do not share their real names. The novel is centered around two main characters, both of whom are the protagonists of the novel, The Man and his son, The Boy.
Ely is an old man the boy and his father meet on the road who has the bearing of a monk or a prophet. The father is immediately suspicious of an old man, partially blind, traveling alone. The man suspects a trap. Ely seems like a religious man, but he possesses an odd demeanor.
Dean's energy sets off Sal's own desires for adventure and exploration, so after Dean returns to his hometown of Denver, Sal decides to set out on his own journey to meet up with his friends. Sal hitchhikes and takes buses to Denver, meeting an array of different characters.
Earlier in The Road, the man usually instructs his son to turn his eyes away from the gruesome corpses they often see along the journey, and the boy wants to help people they meet. Here, they see the corpses of travelers who have been burned alive on the road's tar.
