Magnus Magnentius ( c. 303 – 10 August 353) was a Roman general and usurper against Constantius II. Of Germanic descent, Magnentius served with distinction in Gaul under the emperor Constans. On 18 January 350 Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus. Quickly killing the unpopular Constans, Magnentius gained control over most of the Western Empire.
Magnentius was a usurping Roman emperor from Jan. 18, 350, to Aug. 11, 353. His career forms one episode in the struggles for imperial power that occurred after the death of Constantine the Great (ruled 306–337). Magnentius was a pagan of German descent who had achieved distinction as a soldier.

Magnentius, a usurping emperor 350–3, was at his elevation an army commander in Britain. He was probably born at Amiens. In 350 he was proclaimed emperor by the Gallic cabal which deposed Constans. He crossed to the continent and was defeated by Constantius II at the costly battle of Mursa in Pannonia in 351.
