Cities, in contrast, are large urban areas with dense populations and extensive infrastructure, offering a wide range of services and amenities.
Villages generally have a population of between 500 and 2,500, after which point, they’re usually classified as a town. However, there are numerous villages across the UK with much higher populations.
How did this change as early farming villages grew? What are some examples of trade between villages? How do historians know about this trade? How did changes in production and distribution affect communities? In what ways did village networks affect the population of villages, towns, and cities?
Hamlets are tiny, rural communities. Villages are slightly larger. Towns are larger than villages. Cities are larger than towns. Then there are words like metropolis and even megalopolis to denote huge cities. Some states in the United States have legal definitions for these terms, but most do not.
