A master of monsters and auteur of fantasies, del Toro has spent his career helming grotesque fairy tales about misunderstood creatures in such films as The Devil's Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), and Pan's Labyrinth (2006). The latter earned the filmmaker his first Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay.
