At least 400 cells of Scrippsiella hangoei were counted in each sample, measured and assigned to size classes: 14 to 18 lm, 18 to 22 lm and >22 lm. Resting cysts of S. hangoei (see Heiskanen 1993 and Larsen et al. 1995 for description of the cyst) were also enumerated from the water column samples.
