The genus Entamoeba was defined by Casagrandi and Barbagallo for the species Entamoeba coli, which is known to be a commensal organism. Lösch's organism was renamed Entamoeba histolytica by Fritz Schaudinn in 1903; he later died, in 1906, from a self-inflicted infection when studying this amoeba.

  2. Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic parasitic amoebozoan, part of the genus Entamoeba. Predominantly infecting humans and other primates causing amoebiasis , E. histolytica is estimated to infect about 35-50 million people worldwide. [1]

  3. Entamoeba, protozoan genus of the rhizopodian order Amoebida. Most species are parasitic in the intestines of many vertebrates, including humans; E. histolytica is the cause of human amebic dysentery.

  4. Dec 16, 2010 · Entamoeba histolytica is a human pathogen that causes amoebic dysentery and leads to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Understanding the genome and evolution of the parasite will help explain how, when and why it causes disease.

  5. Oct 1, 2000 · The genus Entamoeba has been studied by biologists for over a century, primarily because it includes the parasite E. histolytica, the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess which together kill as many as 100 000 people annually throughout the world despite the availability of the potent antiamoebic drug metronidazole [2 ...

  6. The genus Entamoeba was named in 1895 by Casagrandi and Barbagallo [ 3 ], who were studying E. coli , and for reasons that are unclear they (and others) concluded that Lösch’s ameba was the same organism.

  7. Entamoeba are pseudopod-forming, protozoan parasites in the subphylum Sarcodina. The genus Entamoeba is composed of five species that infect humans: E. histolytica, E. dispar, E. hartmanni, E. coli, E. polecki and E. gingivalis. Only E. histolytica is known to cause disease in humans.
