In Cristofori's pianos, there are two strings per note throughout the compass. Modern pianos use three strings in the mid and upper range, two in the upper bass, and one in the lower bass, with greater variation in thickness than Cristofori used.
Three pianos by Cristofori survive, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1720; 89.4.1219); at the Museo Strumenti Musicali in Rome (1722); and at the Musikinstrumenten-Museum of Leipzig University (1726). The Metropolitan’s Cristofori, the oldest surviving piano, is in a plain wing-shaped case, outwardly resembling a harpsichord.

A comparison of the 1711 drawing and the hammer actions of the three surviving pianos shows that Cristofori not only made radical changes between 1709 and 1720 but also that he continued to make smaller changes between 1720 and 1726.
