The house was conceived by the Austrian-born Rudolph Michael Schindler [1887-1953], along with Pauline (who received little official recognition for her crucial role in its design), and also by Clyde Chance, a building contractor employed by Schindler, who moved into the house with his wife and child.
The layout of the house itself was also non-traditional-- built as a home for Schindler, his wife Pauline, and Clyde and Marian Chase, the house did not have a traditional living room or bedrooms, but contained four separate studio areas for each of the inhabitants.
