Blackmun was considered a conservative jurist when he joined the Court, but he grew much more liberal as his tenure progressed. In 1986, for example, he dissented from the decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, which upheld a Georgia law criminalizing sodomy and thus set back LGBTQ+ rights.
