Marathon Man is a 1974 conspiracy thriller novel by William Goldman. It was Goldman's most successful thriller novel, and his second suspense novel. [2] In 1976 it was made into a film of the same name, with a screenplay by Goldman, starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, and Roy Scheider and directed by John Schlesinger .
Roy Scheider is also solid as the older brother with a serious demeanor, who is part of a secret organization. Scheider's character comes back to New York after having been gone for a while tending to his duties as a member of said organization. This event acts as a catalyst which kick-starts the main story.
Babe will learn that the mugging was not a random attack after someone close to Babe is found murdered, the deceased whom was not whom he purported to be. From here, Babe is thrown into an international conspiracy concerning Nazi war criminal Christian Szell in hiding, and a large cache of diamonds.
Szell lives in hiding in South America (naturally) and has millions of dollars worth of diamonds in a New York safe-deposit box. When Szell's brother is killed in what can only be described as a quintessentially New York auto crash, Szell has to come out of hiding to collect the diamonds. He's paranoid, and with some justification.
