Microsoft Encarta is a discontinued digital multimedia encyclopedia published by Microsoft from 1993 to 2009. Originally sold on CD-ROM or DVD, it was also available online via annual subscription, although later articles could also be viewed for free online with advertisements.
A subscription Web site debuted in 1998, and an abridged version of Encarta was made available online for free in 2000, with full access available to purchasers of the CD or DVD products. Microsoft began charging for access to all encyclopaedia content the following year, though access to dictionary content remained free.
