An Adventure in Space and Time screens on BBC Two in the UK this Thursday (November 21st) and on BBC America on Friday.

Doctor Who first hit TV screens 50 years ago this week, and to celebrate, the BBC have made a really rather wonderful film about the creation of show and the people behind it.

An Adventure in Space and Time kicks off in 1965, when Who was just hitting its stride, but quickly travels back to a time when the show was just a twinkle in the eye of the BBC Head of Drama Sydney Newman.

The colourful Canadian was looking for something to fill the gap between Grandstand and Jukebox Jury, and hit upon the idea of a science-fiction show that would appeal to children and sports fans alike; something that would educate while it entertained. His only stipulation: “no robots or bug-eyed monsters.”

This hugely entertaining account of Doctor Who’s beginnings should appeal to casual and hardcore fans alike, celebrating both the birth of a TV phenomenon and the remarkable people responsible for it.
