Leavenworth (/ ˈ l ɛ v ə n ˌ w ɜːr θ /) is the county seat and largest city of Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 37,351. It is located on the west bank of the Missouri River.
As the “First City of Kansas”, Leavenworth is the ideal place to explore the state's history. We have a carousel museum complete with a restored 1913 C. W. Parker Carousel; visit the Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum and discover the Black Dignity Portrait Collection.
- Fort Leavenworth. Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth is the oldest active military installation west of the Mississippi River, and the second-oldest active United States Army post west of Washington, D.C..
- Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park. Eventually becoming a byword for all the African-American regiments formed in 1866, the name “Buffalo Soldier” specifically comes from the 10th Cavalry Regiment, which was born here at Fort Leavenworth.
- C. W. Parker Carousel Museum. In 1898, Charles Wallace Parker (1864-1932) built the first Carry-Us-All amusement ride. This invention proved to be such a hit that he soon relocated his growing company from Abilene to Leavenworth.
- Historic Downtown Leavenworth. For a town of just over 37,000, Leavenworth’s downtown has a real energy to it. This spark might come from the fort, constantly bringing new people from different backgrounds and parts of the country to the heart of the city.
Leavenworth History. In 1827, Colonel Henry Leavenworth founded Fort Leavenworth on the bluffs of the Missouri River. For the next several decades Fort Leavenworth played an important role in keeping the peace among the various Indian tribes and the increasing number of settlers heading west.
