Otaru (小樽市, Otaru-shi) is a city and port in Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, northwest of Sapporo. The city faces Ishikari Bay and the Sea of Japan, and has long served as the main port of the bay. With its many historical buildings, Otaru is a popular tourist destination.

- Check out the glass ware. Otaru is one of the main glass producing parts of Japan and it was particularly famous for its oil lamps and glass balls that would have been used in the fishing industry.

The highest vantage point in Otaru is the top of Mt. Tengu, which offers panoramic views of Ishikari Bay, the Shakotan Peninsula, and Otaru. The mountain towers over the city and is a popular ski resort in winter. Take the ropeway up the mountain to enjoy the views. Many visitors also pray for safe travels at Tenguyama Shrine, near the summit.

- Nichigin-dori. Another one of Otaru, Japan’s points of interest is the Nichigin-dori. Translating as ‘Wall Street of the North’ this street in Central Otaru is well worth a wander to get a feel for Otaru’s past as a financial centre.
