    • Roseola. Roseola is a virus that’s more common in younger children (under 2 years old). It first causes a high fever and then a skin rash. It usually goes away on its own and doesn’t cause any problems.
    • Impetigo. Impetigo is a common and very contagious skin infection. Mild cases may go away on their own, but most children will need treatment with antibiotic creams or pills.
    • Hand, foot, and mouth disease. Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood illness. It usually isn’t serious, but it can spread quickly because it’s so contagious.
    • Scabies. Scabies are tiny mites (similar to bugs) that cause a very itchy rash. The mites live in the skin and cause an allergic reaction. They are very contagious and can spread from person-to-person contact.
    • Cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis) Cradle cap, or seborrheic dermatitis, is a rash that occurs on the scalp (and sometimes the face) of newborns and infants.
    • Diaper rash. Diaper rash is redness or irritation in the diaper area. It can be caused by moisture from urine or acidic bowel movements when a diaper is left on for too long.
    • Impetigo. Impetigo is a contagious skin infection caused by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. It looks like yellow crusting and may cause blisters. Impetigo can appear anywhere on the body, but it most often affects areas of exposed skin, such as around the nose and mouth or on the arms and legs.
    • Fifth disease. Fifth disease is a rash caused by the virus parvovirus B19. It causes flu-like symptoms and a “slapped cheek rash,” which looks like redness on both cheeks.
