Straight edge (sometimes abbreviated sXe or signified by XXX or X) is a subculture of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco and recreational drugs in reaction to the punk subculture 's excesses.

The straight edge subculture is considered to have emerged as a response to the heavy drinking and drug use in the punk scene, particularly after the drug-related deaths of multiple well known punk musicians, including Darby Crash, the lead singer of the Germs, and Sid Vicious, bassist of the Sex Pistols.
