    • Bindweed. Scientific name: Convolvulus arvenis. Bindweed is a perennial weed identified by its bright green, hairless stems and arrowhead-shaped leaves with scalloped edges.
    • Canada Thistle. Scientific name: Cirsium arvense. Canada Thistle is a perennial weed that spreads by seed. It has its origins in Europe but was introduced to America in the 16th Century, among other agricultural shipments.
    • Chickweed. Scientific name: Stellaria media. Chickweed is a low-growing winter weed that can establish in cool weather and cause damage to crops early in the growing season.
    • Annual Sow Thistle (Sonchus oleraceus) Spot It: Throughout the U.S. and southern Canada. ID It: Upright plants with smooth, thick stems and bluish green, deeply lobed leaves; yellow dandelion-type flowers that mature into white puffs of seeds.
    • Black Medic (Medicago lupulina) Spot It: Introduced from Europe; common throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada. ID It: Thick mats of low-growing, slightly hairy stems and three-leaflet leaves similar to clover; small yellow flowers in spring followed by black kidney-shape seedpods.
    • Broadleaf Plantain (Plantago major) Spot It: Throughout the U.S. and southern Canada. ID It: Rosettes of large leaves, topped by seed stalks in summer. What to Know: A sign of poor soil, a thick, lush lawn is the best defense against this perennial weed.
    • Burdock (Arctium spp.) Spot It: Throughout most of the continental U.S. (except Florida) and southern Canada. ID It: Broad, hairy leaves form a rosette; fuzzy purple-pink flowers mature into burrs that cling to all that passes.
