Patrick Allen was a British actor who portrayed Sebastian Moran in the Granada Television series of Sherlock Holmes.
A British actor born in today's Malawi (then known as Nyasaland), where his father did business as a tobacco farmer, Patrick Allen spent most of his life in the United Kingdom. He spent part of his later childhood and youth in Canada, where he was evacuated to during the Second World War. He finished his college education in Montreal, at McGill University. He returned to the UK in 1953, debuted in an Alfred Hitchcock film the following year, and had a steady stream of mostly British television and film roles in the following decades.
Patrick Allen was notable for his fairly extensive voice acting portfolio, providing voiceover for a number of British animated, live-action and documentary programmes, for child and adult viewers alike. (In fact, his last credits before his death included providing narration for two historical documentaries, and continuity and ident voiceovers for the television channel E4.) He largely retired from regular live-action acting during the 1980s and 1990s, to concentrate on voice acting and narration.
