There is nothing illegal, unconstitutional, or unethical about tricking a suspect in that fashion—at least, not in the United States.
As usual, Columbo asks Brimmer about the things he doesn't understand. Lenore was hit on her head with a left hand, but frist Brimmer says that he's right-handed, to being forced to admit soon afterwards that he's ambidextrous, which means that he can write both with his right and his left hand.

Brimmer’s car won’t work and he sends it off to the garage to be fixed. Then he gets a call from Mr. Kennicut; Columbo has requested that Mrs. Kennicut’s body be exhumed for some reason.
