May 16, 2024 · West Potomac was created after a decision by the county to merge former Fairfax County high schools Groveton and Fort Hunt to create one new school. This idea came after the county saw low enrollment in the eastern part of the Mount Vernon district, among other issues that a task force decided could be solved by closing one of the schools down.
