Middleton was first settled by English settlers in the 1840s. It was initially called Peatville for the large quantities of peat extracted from its soil. The village was renamed Middleton when it was separated from the town of Madison in 1848, a name suggested by Henry Barnes, a native of Vermont.

The name Middleton was chosen by Harry Barnes, an early settler in the area; named after Barnes’ home in Vermont. By the early 1840s a few early settlers had located in an area that would become Sections 26 & 27 in the Town of Middleton.

The Middleton family is an English family that has been related to the British royal family by marriage since the wedding of Catherine Middleton to Prince William in April 2011, when she became the Duchess of Cambridge. The couple have three children: George, Charlotte and Louis.
