In the late 1830s, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad came to Phoenixville. In September of 1837, the 1932 foot-long Black Rock Railroad Tunnel was completed although the railroad did not open for business in Phoenixville until January of 1842. The tunnel was started in December of 1835.
