I happen to like Solomon Kane (he’s a righteous badass as far as I’m concerned) and I didn’t come away reading the article thinking that you were unduly harsh on him. The series from the 80s you mentioned was probably The Sword of Solomon Kane from Marvel Comics.
A late-16th-to-early-17th century Puritan, Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. His adventures, published mostly in the pulp magazine Weird Tales, often take him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back.
By Blosser's timeline, Kane would have been in his sixties during his African adventures. Toogood's scheme puts him in his forties, an age that fits much better with the action of the stories. This chronology constitutes what I was able to glean from Richard Toogood's excellent article.
