Following several Moriori petitions, the New Zealand government finally stepped in after 28 years. However, a land court in 1870 decided to give most of the Chatham Islands to Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga, despite the fact that most Māori had by this time returned to their homes in Taranaki.
But the myth was a powerful political weapon to justify European colonisation of New Zealand and so it stuck fast in the consciousness of Pākehā New Zealanders. For the record, the first Moriori ancestors, according to our own traditions, arrived directly from Eastern Polynesia to Rēkohu.
Although the Moriori are close relatives of the Māori, they have distinct features which indicate an independent colonisation from tropical Polynesia. These first settlers were said to be descended from Te Aomarama and Rongomaiwhenua (which is Moriori for Sky Father and Earth Mother).
Scholars place their migration to the Chatham Islands from New Zealand in the early 16th century. Moriori tradition holds that the islands were initially populated by the Hamata, a mythical race descended from the gods. The Hamata acted as lawgivers and keepers of knowledge for the early settlers.
